The Story of Our Bakery

Our story here at Frosting is one that we hope will inspire and remind people to follow their dreams!

Once Upon a Cake,

In a huge city full of hustle and bustle and fast track life, there were two girls looking to sprinkle their sweetness over the city and its people. Kirstyn Royce knew early on that her life was destined for cake making. Kirstyn’s mom would bake cakes and sweet treats for her two little girls Alex and Kirst. From this Kirst let her imagination run wild!! She would spend her play time making mud pies and making magical poison cakes, unbeknownst to her, she would later put this creativity and magic into creating amazing and delicious Couture cakes (minus the mud and poison, of course!) Alexia Nicholaou grew up in her Greek home in which her grandmothers would bake incredible Greek traditional cookies, cakes and breads. Lexi and her sister Anna-Stella were always dressed in aprons and ready to help with the baking and cooking. There was something about the way that baking made people come together and celebrate, that inspired a dream in Lexi that she was destined to follow her heritage and be as great a baker as her grandmothers so that she too could bring people together through food. After school, Kirst pursued her love for baking by doing a National Diploma in Hospitality Management at the University of Johannesburg Sol Kerzner School of Tourism and Hospitality, specialising in professional cookery. This lead to her working at ‘By Word of Mouth Catering’ and at ‘The Sandton Sun Hotel’ in order to complete the practical side of the diploma. With all her knowledge and support from her family and friends, Kirstyn started up her own business, ‘Frosting Bakery’. Running this business for three years from the kitchen in her parents home, Kirstyn built up a large client base and developed incredible skills for designing and baking couture baked goods.

In the meantime, Lexi studied a B.com Marketing and did her Honours in B.com Logistics at the University of Johannesburg. After completing her degree she worked for her parents at their Pick’n’Pay for four years and gained a great sense of business skill and customer service. However, she still desperately wanted to pursue her dream of being a baker so she took up baking courses at the Mondeor Home Bake, where she learnt all the basic baking techniques and how to use the correct tools necessary to make cakes not only taste good, but also look professional. One fateful day, Kirst walked into the sugar flower course at Mondeor Homebake where she met Lexi. This was the start of a great friendship which later led to an incredible partnership. After a year of being friends, these girls decided to join forces and take over the Baking world!! Frosting Bakery is no longer nestled in the kitchen at the Royce house, but rather in a sweet little flat dedicated completely and entirely to baking! Frosting Bakery is run by Kirst and Lexi in Hurylvale, Edenvale and it is always full of sweet smells and baked treats ready to brighten up even the worst of days!
